We first met Nupur Goenka, founder of Aish in Mumbai over a coffee in the new, swanky Starbucks in the Taj hotel. Surrounded by her beautiful scarfs, her enthusiasm and love for textiles was obvious from the moment we arrived. She is a big believer in ‘trade not aid’ and set up Aish to function in a way that provides the weavers she works with a competitive space for their products within the market. She also feels strongly that her products are relevant and don’t just rely on a charity or ‘good story’ aspect. Aish creates, sources and designs textiles using age old crafting techniques such as, Jamdani weaving, Ikat dyeing, Bengal Handloom, Gujarat embroidery, Shibori dyeing and many more. Both trained textile designers ourselves, we were blown away by the quality and detail in her designs.
